Narbonne, its market hall and palace
Built in 1901 on a Baltard model, Narbonne’s market hall is a must: fish, charcuterie, cheeses, Minervois vegetables and counters where you lunch in the middle of the market. A few steps away, the massive Archbishops’ Palace shelters a museum and a keep with a city panorama. A midday date around a seafood platter, then a stroll through the unfinished yet spectacular Saint-Just Cathedral, and the day is off to a fine start.
Canal du Midi and lagoons
UNESCO-listed, the Canal du Midi crosses the département from Castelnaudary, home of cassoulet, to the Mediterranean. A bike ride along the towpath in the shade of the plane trees, or a few hours on a barge, make for a peaceful, original date. Around them, the Bages-Sigean lagoon and the Leucate lagoon host pink flamingos, kitesurfers and fishermen. A natural setting that invites you to slow down together.
Gruissan, Leucate and southern treats
Gruissan and its circular village around the Tour Barberousse, Leucate and its cliffs, Port-la-Nouvelle and its fishing boats: the Audois coast offers every mood. The day often ends with a glass of Blanquette de Limoux, one of the oldest sparkling wines in the world. On Lyad, Audois singles share their favourite waterside tables; it is up to you to find someone to raise the next glass with.
